UN envoy voices concern over violence in Myanmar’s Kayah State

GENEVA (18 July 2022) – The UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, Ms. Noeleen Heyzer, today expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Myanmar’s Kayah State, which has resulted in civilian casualties, displacement and suffering.

According to reports, fighting between the Myanmar military and armed groups in Kayah State has intensified in recent weeks, leading to the displacement of thousands of civilians. Many have fled to neighboring areas, while others remain trapped in conflict-affected areas with limited access to food, water and healthcare.

“I am deeply concerned by the escalating violence in Kayah State,” said Ms. Heyzer. “The use of heavy weapons in populated areas is unacceptable and has resulted in civilian casualties and suffering. I call for an immediate end to the violence and for all parties to respect international humanitarian law.”

Ms. Heyzer also expressed concern over the detention of civilians, including women and children, by the Myanmar military. She called for the immediate release of all those arbitrarily detained.

“The people of Myanmar have suffered enough,” said Ms. Heyzer. “It is time for the violence to end and for a political solution to be found that respects the will of the people.”

The Special Envoy reiterated her call for the international community to take urgent and collective action to address the crisis in Myanmar. She urged the Security Council to consider all necessary measures to protect civilians and support the people of Myanmar in their pursuit of democracy, peace and human rights.
