New COVID-19 Deaths in United States Reach Record Number

The United States reported the most daily coronavirus deaths since the start of the pandemic, with about 4,000 new fatalities pushing the nation’s toll past 250,000.

The record one-day death toll reported Tuesday was far higher than the previous peak of about 2,800 set in April. The number of deaths is also likely an undercount because many states don’t report COVID-19 fatalities over the weekend.

More than 30 states are reporting record numbers of new cases, and 45 states are reporting record hospitalizations. Public health experts say the worsening crisis was fueled by holiday gatherings, travel and cold weather that drove more people indoors.
