The Google News Initiative (GNI) today announced the launch of the $3 million Black News and Information Fund, a new initiative to support the sustainability and growth of Black-owned and -operated news organizations in the United States. The fund will provide financial support to Black-owned and -operated news organizations to help them build capacity, increase revenue, and expand their reach.

The Black News and Information Fund is part of GNI’s broader commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion in the news industry. In recent years, GNI has launched a number of initiatives to support underrepresented voices in the newsroom, including the GNI Startups Lab and the GNI Innovation Challenge.

The Black News and Information Fund will be administered by the Local Media Association (LMA), a non-profit organization that represents more than 3,000 local news organizations in the United States. The LMA will work with GNI to identify and support Black-owned and -operated news organizations that are committed to providing high-quality journalism to their communities.
