Google Pushing to Block Discrimination Against Black Women In Tech

As part of its Racial Justice Initiative, the tech giant Google is investing millions of dollars towards combating discrimination against Black women in technology fields. According to a report published by The New York Times, Google has pledged a total of $25 million to organizations working to provide support and opportunities for Black women in the tech industry.

The Racial Justice Initiative was launched by Google in June 2020, following the widespread protests against police brutality and racial injustice that swept across the United States. The initiative aims to address racial inequity and promote social justice, with a focus on supporting organizations led by and serving Black communities.

One of the key areas that Google has identified as needing attention is the lack of representation of Black women in the tech industry. According to a report by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), Black women make up only 3% of the workforce in the tech sector. This underrepresentation is due to a number of factors, including systemic racism, lack of access to opportunities, and bias in hiring and promotion practices.

Google’s investment in organizations working to support Black women in tech aims to address these issues and create a more inclusive and equitable tech industry. The company is partnering with organizations such as the Black Women in Technology (BWIT) organization, which provides mentorship, networking, and professional development opportunities for Black women in tech. Google is also supporting organizations such as Code2040, which works to increase the number of Black and Latinx engineers in the tech industry.

In addition to its financial investment, Google is also using its platform and resources to promote Black women in tech. The company is hosting a series of virtual events and workshops designed to connect Black women with tech industry leaders and provide them with the tools and resources they need to succeed. Google is also working to make its own hiring and promotion practices more inclusive and equitable.

The initiative by Google is a significant step towards addressing the underrepresentation of Black women in the tech industry. The company’s investment in organizations working to support Black women is a welcome sign of progress, and it is hoped that other companies will follow suit. By working together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable tech industry that benefits everyone..
