After Gunman’s Parole, Family Pleads for Answers in Missing-Persons Case

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The family of a woman who disappeared more than five years ago is pleading for answers after learning that a man paroled in her case was re-arrested two weeks ago on suspicion of kidnapping and murder..

The family of Tyanna Marquez, 22, has long suspected that her ex-boyfriend, Victor Sandoval, was involved in her disappearance. They say police never thoroughly investigated their claims, leading to delays in the case that may have prevented her from being found alive..

Sandoval, 31, was arrested on Jan. 29 on suspicion of kidnapping and murdering Mary Barnes, 39, in Fontana, Calif. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Sandoval knew Barnes and they had been together the night she disappeared in December 2022..

In a news conference on Tuesday, Feb. 7, Marquez’s family members said they were devastated to learn of Barnes’ killing and Sandoval’s arrest. They also expressed frustration with the San Bernardino Police Department, which they say mishandled their investigation into Marquez’s case..
