South Carolina officers fire at man fleeing traffic stop, killing him

**North Charleston, S.C.** – Six North Charleston police officers fired at and killed a man who fled during a traffic stop early Thursday morning, authorities said.

The man, identified as 31-year-old Jamal Sutherland, was driving a vehicle that was pulled over after running a stop sign around 12:15 a.m., police said.

Sutherland initially pulled over, but as an officer approached the vehicle, he put the car in drive and fled, police said.

Officers pursued Sutherland’s vehicle for a short distance before he crashed into a parked car and fled on foot, police said.

As officers pursued Sutherland on foot, he fired a gun at them, police said. Six officers returned fire, striking Sutherland multiple times, police said.

Sutherland was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, police said.

No officers were injured in the shooting, police said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting, police said.

Sutherland’s family is demanding answers from the North Charleston Police Department after he was shot and killed by six officers.
